Republican and Christian leaders are praising President-Elect Donald Trump for what they consider an “amazingly inclusive” New Year’s message.
“Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don’t know what to do. Love!” Trump tweeted on New Year’s Eve.
Jerry Falwell Jr., president of Liberty University, said the tweet warmed his heart and reminded him why he had supported Trump all along. “The Bible calls on us to love our enemies,” Falwell said. “That’s exactly what the President-Elect is doing. He mentions his enemies and then says ‘Love!'”
Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House, praised Trump for doing something President Obama had never done: including his enemies in his New Year’s message.
“Donald Trump may be unorthodox, but he’s amazingly inclusive,” Gingrich said. “The current president just ignores his enemies. The president-elect invites them to be part of his New Year’s message. It’s the Christian way.”
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a staunch Trump supporter during the election campaign, said the president-elect had gone out of his way to make sure his enemies felt loved.
“If you browsed the internet on Saturday, particularly social media, I’m sure you saw a lot of activity from President-Elect Trump’s enemies,” Giuliani said. “Instead of just dismissing them as being unworthy of his attention, he gave them an opportunity to come out and be heard.”
Giuliani defended Trump on the new Fox News show “WTT” (What Trump Tweeted), while Gingrich appeared on the new CNN show “WTF” (What Trump Fibbed).
